CASA COMPASIVA

“Compassion House” is a Christian birth and midwifery training center in Oaxaca, Mexico that aims to educate, empower, and provide a safe birthing environment to pregnant women and their families. Oaxaca is a region of Mexico known for its terrible maternal care and high maternal/infant deaths. The limited options within Oaxaca led founder, Lila Joy Quezada, to seek to open the first birthing center available to local women in the area.

As a ministry, they also seek to share the Gospel with the families who seek care within their facility.

CASA COMPASIVA’S MISSION STATEMENT

HEALTHY FAMILIES – Body, soul, & spirit.

MISSION: Use compassionate maternity care and practical biblical teachings to impact and strengthen families with the love of Christ.

MIDWIFERY PRACTICE: Use holistic, evidence-based practices for the care of mothers and babies from pregnancy until one year after birth.

WHY DOES OAXACA NEED A CHRISTIAN BIRTH CENTER?

Many thousands of people in Oaxaca remain isolated from medical care, and even those who have access to government-staffed clinics often receive inadequate care. Women giving birth within the government medical system are often subjected to trauma through complete isolation from friends and loved ones, racial prejudice, over-crowded conditions, and highly interventionist obstetric policies.

There are 19,000 births still taking place annually in Oaxaca outside of health centers and hospitals. What is lacking is a Christian approach to pregnancy and childbirth. Casa Compasiva will not replace the medical approach of the local hospitals, but will honour God as the Creator and Sustainer of our bodies.  It will model the love of Christ in the context of loving and receiving little children.  It will demonstrate how the Good Shepherd “gently leads those that are with young.”  It will provide biblical education and resources not just for pregnancy and childbirth, but also for marriage and parenting.  The gospel will be presented both overtly and covertly – both in word and in deed.

Casa Compasiva works to provide a safe, natural birth environment that is respectful of the Oaxacan people while utilizing essential midwifery and medical knowledge to provide quality care and to save lives.

2021 UPDATE

Casa Compasiva is celebrating THEIR ten-year anniversary! Although Covid has caused all kinds of frustration and challenges, Casa is now attending to many more pre-natal clients than in pre-Covid days. Casa’s birth volume has doubled as women seek safe, out-of-hospital, and hopefully Covid-free environments in which to give birth. This client increase results in many more families hearing the gospel and being blessed with the compassionate maternity care given by our Jesus-following doctors, midwives and doulas. Good news for the ministry of Casa Compasiva!

But unfortunately, bad news for the laundry facilities of Casa Compasiva. Constant use and rigorous sanitation protocols have strained our primitive laundry services to the breaking point. Casa is in urgent need of an upgrade! These funds will provide for improved facilities that are up to the challenge of cleaning the masses of bed linens, towels, uniforms, and birth gowns. A generous donor is offering to match funds of up to $4,000. Every dollar of your donation will double immediately! You have the opportunity to raise a potential of $8,000! Let’s keep Casa staff safe and the linens clean!
